NIFTEM-T was setup to serve as a national institution for research, education, and training in post-harvest processing of crops of wetlands and storm prone regions.
It imparts training for upgrading the skills of academicians, research students and food processing entrepreneurs & manpower for promoting growth of new food industry.
It also establishes linkages with food processing related industries & R&D institutions for achieving scientific basis for decision making.

NIFTEM is the brainchild of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI)Government of India .
It was conceptualized by Government of India on persistent demand of the food industry to have an apex body as a "One Stop Solution Provider" for the various problems of the sector.
The institute is spread over an area of 100 acres. The institute intends to act as a centre of excellence and an apex world class centre of global standards in the area of food technology and management.
